So far on ‘With WIHL’ my articles have come from my own thoughts and opinions. This year: I want to go beyond that. I want to write others' thoughts and opinions instead. So, I’ve created a new series called ‘20 Questions with’.
In this series I interview different people with the same set of questions; to find out more about the professional and personal life.
First up: Malcolm Fu. I've know Mal for some time I can safely say he’s an up-and-coming photographer in the Singapore performance scene. Read on to find out his answers to my own version of the classic game: ‘20 questions’.
1. What is your preferred name?
Mal. Being called ‘Malcolm’ makes me feel like I’m in trouble.
2. What are you working towards professionally?
So I’m currently a student at NUS, studying Business Administration. My main aim is to contribute back to the Arts scene in Singapore with my management and business skills. Singapore has been growing and changing really quickly, and now it's accelerating the growth of the arts. I want to join in on promoting that
3. Where can we see your work?
My website: Tinyurl.com/mal-photography
4. When did you start?
My interest in photography started when I was about 8 years old. I was in Primary School and just enjoyed it. DSLRs were a new thing to me, and they were vastly different compared to the old 2Megapixel cameras on Nokia phones. We were all like “WOAHHHH” and it was just super cool to play with such toys at that age. So my dad bought me my first camera when I was about 13, and it just went uphill from there hahah. From a professional standpoint, I’ve been shooting for about 3 years now? I started making the transition right about in 2017, and finally registered my company in 2019.
5. How do you start?
I started in my primary school club, later I moved onto shooting performances. Why? Well, I performed back in secondary school and junior college and realised that I could put 2 together and understand where I finally belong.
6. What separates your photography from others?
I have experience as a performer, I understand what performers are doing and this helps me accurately capture their creation and what they want to be shown.
7. What is your favourite part of your work?
Meeting people 😊
8. What should we look forward to from you in 2020?
Honestly at first, I wanted to take a bit of a break, I was slightly bummed out at my grades in my first semester…. I hope to maintain and keep things the way they are. AKA I’ll still do shoots but I would like to try and focus a little more on school.
9. And in the long term?
I want to gain more international exposure. I want to use my opportunities in school to do that as well.
10. What other hobbies/jobs do you have?
I just quit my job *Inserts Nervous Laughter*
11.What is your best quality?
In terms of my physique; it’s my smile
In terms of my personality: it’s my outgoing nature
12. What is your worst quality?
Generally, I’m not very patient. I like things to be fast and efficient. I’m working on it though.
13. Describe yourself in 3 words
Energetic, outgoing and enthusiastic
14. An unpopular opinion you have?
Metal straws don’t do jack shit bro. Like, stop hating on me just because I don’t use a metal straw (even when I recycle and care for the environment in other ways.) Metal Straw production uses more oil, water, energy etc. If you really want to save the world: JUST stop using them completely…and stop giving your money to evil capitalists
p.s. you could always wash plastic straw guys
15. What is your star sign?
I don’t know, I think I’m a Scorpio
16. Do you believe in star signs?
No. Fuck that shit 😂 I REFUSE TO BE LABELLED
17. Live to eat or eat to live?
Live to eat!
18. Favourite place you've traveled to?
Yosemite National Park, California. I went there in December 2019, it was absolutely stunning.
19.The next top place you want to travel to?
Switzerland (I’d like to travel there on my own, and try to backpack/roadtrip/jump trains all the way down to like Spain or something.)
20. Lastly: the biggest life lesson you live your life by
Loyalty is the most important thing.
I'll be collaborating with Mal soon on a shoot so make sure to follow our instas to see our work!
